Ellen Page participates in Jason Reitman's "Stand By Me" live read

Stand By Me Live-ReadOn March 17 »Juno« director Jason Reitman got several actresses together at LACMA's Bing Theater in Los Angeles to read the screenplay for the 1986 coming-of-age classic "Stand By Me" written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans. Based on Stephen King’s novella "The Body" the movie is about a group of 12-year-old boys who go off in search of a dead body. Since the original centers around a group of male characters dealing with intense issues, it was interesting to see how a cast of acclaimed actresses and comedians would inhabit the roles.
However, the squad of incredible women, including Sarah Thyre, Charlyne Yi, Molly Ephraim, Kaitlyn Dever, Kristen Schaal, Collette Wolfe, Rosemarie DeWitt and Ellen, took the stage and illustrated that no matter gender or even the time period, the heartache of growing up is universal. The cast — who, per Live Reads tradition, had not rehearsed the material prior to taking to the stage — stumbled only once or twice as they bushwhacked through the script's dense tangle of adolescent insults and malapropisms. Yi as Verne and Ephraim as Teddy were reportedly particular stand outs, as was Thyre reading multiple different parts and destroying the audience with each one. Page, in turn, brought a quiet strength to Chris and Dever was inquisitive and innocent in her portrayal of young Gordy.
This was Ellen's second participation in the series after voicing Han Solo in the live read of "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" on December 18, 2014.

For more in-depth reviews on the performances as well as the event itself, we suggest taking a look at the articles linked below from Film Independent, Indiewire and HelloGiggles.

Indiewire - The All-Female "Stand By Me" Live Read Shows That Growing Up is for Everyone
HelloGiggles - The "Stand by Me" gender-swapped live read had me nostalgic for a time I've never known

There is unfortunately no video or audio footage as the Live Read series is a special event, where recording is strictly prohibited. In a world where everything is accessible to everyone all the time, this is entertainment solely meant for the people in attendance, a real once in a lifetime opportunity. So if you can, it's highly recommended that you get to one of Film Independent's Live Reads and experience a night with Reitman and one of his casts yourself!

US promotion tour for VICELAND's »Gaycation« / SXSW Keynote / Ellen Page on the cover of Malibu Magazine

On March 8th Trevor Noah welcomed Ellen Page on his news satire television program "The Daily Show" to discuss »Gaycation«. This brief, yet memorable appearance kicked off another promotion tour for VICELAND's LGBT travel series. On the following day she and Ian Daniel went to the AOL Studios in New York City to present it in front of a live audience on AOL BUILD. They also stopped by Time Inc's Headquarters for a special two episodes screening followed by a Q&A session as well as The Huffington Post's Headquarters to dish on their exploration of LGBTQ cultures throughout the world on HuffPost Live. Furthermore, the duo was guest on several radio shows, including "The Michelangelo Signorile Show" on SiriusXM and "All Things Considered" on NPR. You can listen to both radio interviews here in the audio section!

The last stop was the SXSW Film Conference at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas on Saturday, where the duo sat down for a keynote talk about »Gaycation«, their careers, the equality movement, and cultural attitudes towards LGBTQ people. Before they discussed the documentary series, Page and Daniel started off speaking about their friendship, which sprung up in 2008 when they met studying permaculture (a system of agricultural principles simulating natural ecosystems) at the Lost Valley Educational Center, 18 miles southeast of Eugene, Oregon. "Ellen radiated depth," Daniel said as he remembered hearing about her Oscar buzz, but hadn’t seen any of her work when he first met her. Page added she quickly found a kindred soul in him, and they have since become each other's best friends.

This special friendship bleeds into »Gaycation« and grounds the journey they take viewers on. Along their travels around the globe, the Haligonian and the New Yorker conduct interviews with gay people too afraid to come out, transgender individuals unabashedly proud of their identities and more. "This is an opportunity that allows voices to be heard, to find out about the struggles that a lot of people have," Page stated. She and her male friend particularly remembered the moment where they filmed the coming out of a gay Japanese man to his mother. They were surprised the man requested capturing this pivotal moment in his life and they were moved by the raw emotions on display as the man’s mother ultimately reconciled her shock with her love for him.

However, Ellen and Ian's subjects aren't the only ones who reveal their vulnerability – their job as the show's hosts and co-creators puts them in a vulnerable place as well. While filming in Brazil, the two interviewed an ex-cop who kills homosexuals and both were frightened during the conversation. When they revealed being gay, he eventually refused to look them in the eye. Thankfully, a bodyguard was present to protect them. In fact, much of the show deals with individuals who hate gay people. This aspect can be attributed to Page's "fascination" with homophobes. The episode taking place in the United States shows her memorable confrontation with US Presidential candidate Ted Cruz, during which she confronts him about gay rights. "I am baffled by the hatred people have," Page noted in this context.

Page and Daniel also emphasized that the process of making the LGBT travel series was one of balance. As filmmakers, they not only had to make sure »Gaycation« was enlightening as well as engaging to viewers, but also had to be fun as well as put their authentic selves in front of the camera. Page recalled working on the episode in Jamaica, where she debated whether to tell the Rastafari that she and her male companion were gay at the expense of losing good shots at a celebration because of their sexual orientation.

Though the show brings viewers across the paths of many real individuals that are being oppressed, Ian admitted it's not an objective work. "We have a bias," he said. "We’re not coming in as journalists." Both of them also commented that they aim to convey the struggles of LGBTQ people around the world, and they hope they do justice to their subjects.

Speaking of the festival, it was an unexpected surprise to see a movie entitled "Miss Stevens" in this year's lineup. For those who don't remember: Back in February 2013 this project was announced as Ellen Page's directorial debut with actress Anna Faris starring in the lead role. Thanks to IMDb's news desk, it was possible to recapitulate what happened in the meanwhile: According to a handful reports, screenplay writer Julia Hart replaced Ellen in June 2015 to make her own debut in the director's chair and the main cast comprised Lily Rabe ("American Horror Story"), Timothee Chalamet ("Interstellar"), Lili Reinhart ("Kings of Summer"), Anthony Quintal ("Lohanthony") and Rob Huebel ("The Descendants") from then on. It is regrettable that these changes weren't disclosed in a more transparent way.

Ellen is on the cover of the current April 2016 issue of Malibu Magazine. It is available on newsstands now, and can be purchased at the mag's official online shop and as digital edition via PocketMags and iTunes!

Ellen Page appears on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and Anna Faris' "Unqualified" podcast

Ellen Page, actress and stand-up comedian Jenny Slate and actor and comedian Paul Rust stopped by "The Late Late Show with James Corden" last Monday. After performing a sketch in which they pretended being one happy family and taking some photo booth pics for the backstage wall, the trio was simultaneously introduced by the British host and sat down on the couch for a cheerful chat. Page took this opportunity to promote her VICELAND series »Gaycation« and mentioned her puppy Patters after Slate talked about her dog named Reggie Watts who literally eats anything it can find. During the appearance, we also learned about Ellen's ladybug moves at Jane Fonda's famous dance parties and that she liked writing fake love letters during her hard teenage years. Between laughs, the Canadian actress admitted, "I would write fake letters. I'd be like overseas and writing letters to like pretend people." "You'd write pretend letters to pretend people as a pretend person?" commented Corden. You can watch the complete video from the show after the jump!

Anna Faris Is UnqualifiedIn the latest episode of "Unqualified" Ellen hung out with Anna Faris and co-host Sim Sarna discussing her own experience of eating dog food, Anna's knowledge of Canadian provinces and her fanciful idea of Ellen spending a lonely time on the coast (which was perfectly captured by Twitter user @TheyNamedMeJay by the way) and why it's Anna's dream to become a flight attendant. Furthermore, Page revealed her previously unknown middle name Grace and talked about her new LGBT docu-series, which literally moved Faris to tears. And of course there were the "not-so-great relationship advices from completely unqualified Hollywood types" in the form of listener calls. First, the gang offered some unqualified advice to a woman who still has intense feelings for her first love ... with whom she happens to work ... even though she's engaged to another man and just had a child with him! They also helped a male caller decide whether to bring a date to a wedding where he'll see his longtime crush with her new boyfriend! The whole 78 minutes long podcast is available on iTunes, SoundCloud as well as YouTube, it can be downloaded directly on the official website annafarisisunqualified.com, and is embedded below!

VICELAND - Gaycation

While the first episode of »Gaycation« will premiere on the new cable network today at 10 p.m. ET/PT, VICELAND has already made the next episodes ("Brazil" and "Jamaica") available to its cable subscribers. Check out the series's official page at www.viceland.com/en_us/show/gaycation for further information!

Sleepy Dog Films releases the first official trailer for its upcoming animated film »Window Horses«

Sleepy Dog Films has released the very first trailer for its feature length work in progress animated film »Window Horses«, which is scheduled to come out later this year.

In this coming-of-age story, Rosie Ming, a young Canadian poet, is invited to perform at a Poetry Festival in Shiraz, Iran, but she’d rather be in Paris. She lives at home with her over-protective Chinese grandparents and has never been anywhere by herself. Once in Iran, she finds herself in the company of poets and Persians, all who tell her stories that force her to confront her past; the Iranian father she assumed abandoned her and the nature of Poetry itself. It's about building bridges between cultural and generational divides. It’s about being curious. Staying open. And finding your own voice through the magic of poetry.

Ellen Page has a supporting voice role as Rosie's best friend Kelly in it, who likes to talk a lot. Other members of the voice-cast include Sandra Oh, Nancy Kwan, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Camyar Chaichian, Navid Negahban, Omid Abtahi, Don McKellar, Kristen Thomson, Jun (James) Zhu, Panta Mosleh and Eddy Ko.

We also would like to point out that you can still contribute to the project and get rewarded with a digital download of the film (once it's completed), an autographed DVD or an autographed graphic novel!

Window Horses

In other news, Ellen will be on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" next Monday at 12:37 AM/11:37 PM CT on CBS! She will also make an appearance on actress Anna Faris' comedy podcast "Unqualified" on the following Tuesday!
